OUR STORY
The Fish House has been a proud part of the Ruskin community since 2002, originally opened by Jeff and Cheryl Horne. In 2008, longtime Ruskin resident Julie Cockerham took over the restaurant after spending two years working there and falling in love with the people, the food, and the heart behind it all.

When she heard the Hornes were interested in selling, she would stop in the parking lot every day to pray over it. At the time, she was raising two kids and working weekends. It wasn’t easy, but her passion for the place never wavered.

Under Julie's ownership, the core menu has stayed true to its roots, keeping the same recipes guests have loved for years. She did, however, bring a few new additions—like a kids menu, chicken tenders, corn dogs, and a few new sides—making sure there was something for everyone in the family.

The Fish House has always been a family affair. Julie's kids, fourth-generation Ruskin locals, started helping out at the restaurant when they were just teenagers—doing everything from washing dishes to prepping sauces. Today, the family spirit still runs strong: Kristen is now a police officer in Hillsborough County, and Magnus is pursuing a career as a firefighter in Sarasota County.

Over the years, the Fish House has weathered its share of storms—both literally and figuratively. When Hurricane Helene devastated the area, forcing the Fish House to close for four long months, Julie transformed the outdoor seating area into a hurricane relief center. She gave what she could to those who, like her, had lost everything. For her strength and service, she was honored with the Hurricane Hero Award by U.S. Representative Kathy Castor. But through the strength, generosity, and resilience of our neighbors, family, and longtime customers, we were able to rebuild. On January 30, 2025, The Fish House proudly reopened—rebuilt, revived, and ready to serve.

Even in the hardest times, our team and our community have shown what true heart looks like. After rebuilding after the 2024 hurricane season, our loyal employees came back. And now, after our most challenging season yet, we’re here once again—grateful, grounded, and ready to serve.

Julie’s favorite part of owning the Fish House? It’s the people. “Meeting and growing with the core of Ruskin has been a true blessing,” she says. The biggest challenge? Keeping up with the rising cost of seafood and the demands of a fast-growing town—all while balancing life as a single mom and small business owner.

We’re proud to be part of this town’s story, serving up fresh, comforting meals with a side of southern hospitality—and even prouder to welcome you to our table. From our family to yours, welcome to The Fish House.
